The First Alice In Wonderland

With Tim Burton's new version coming out on friday the British Film Institute decided to release the restored original. This edition focused the scenes around John Tenniel's illustrations making it very different from Disney's film.

Fight the Power

For skateboarders, the Brooklyn Banks, beneath the Brooklyn Bridge, has been the marquee boarding spot since the 70s. The city has announced plans to paint the underside of the Brooklyn Bridge and wants to take over this communal skate area for equipment storage until at least 2014. We all know how that could end. But YOU can help!

Skate legend Steve Rodriguez (getting sick, above), of 5Boro Skateboards is fighting City Hall to preserve part of the park. To help keep the Brooklyn Banks, please spread the word, and send an email to brooklynbridgeoutreach@gmail.com.

And if anyone has creative ideas on other ways to spread the word, please let me know, and I will forward them to Steve. Thanks everyone!

Jordan Brown

A twelve year-old boy who murdered his 8-month pregnant stepmother. Brown shot his stepmother's head while she was fast asleep. This happened a week ago. The gun he used was his own - a youth model 20-gauge shotgun for hunting. Not that the boy is not guilty, he certainly is. But the fact that his dad lets him own a gun in the first place is questionable.

Erik Hamline

I stumbled on this artist while browsing through the AIGA website and thought his work is awesome. He's a freelance designer based in Minneapolis. Nice letterpress stuff and good use with neon and washed out colors. Also, amazing illustrations. I was surprised to know that he was only 23 years old. Probably just fresh out of college. You can take a look at more of Hamline's work on his website: http://woodsandweather.com/

Lee Clow's office

Here's an interview with Rob Schwartz from Chiat...mostly boring. BUT if you skip to around 4:30 he does a tour of the building and Lee Clow's office. It's SO COOL. I would love to go to work and have a basketball court with a giant skull and crossbones in the middle of the building.

Selected by leading creative directors, art directors and writers, the winning entries will be distributed worldwide in the Communication Arts Advertising Annual and on commarts.com, assuring important exposure to the creators of this outstanding work.

This competition has a slightly higher entrance fee then we would all like. But I thought it would be cool to share with everyone. The deadline is May 14, 2010.

monkeys, dresses, & ice cream

so the book of the week is charley HARPER. he did a lot of animal illustrations with abc books and such. nice looking book...but it should be for $135.

over the past week i came across "crystallized: ways to say black". they're 22 black dresses using swarvoski crystals and designed by top fashion designers to benefit the american cancer society. i LOVE the photography for these (done by scheltens & abbenes). it's hard to give life to fashion that isn't on a person, but these do it so well. they have weight and form and movement, and i love the way the sheen of the black silk creates these violent, dagger-like, but still pillowy kind of shapes around the dresses. it's a little bit distracting for the black silk dresses that blend in, but overall i think the effect is stunning. i guess it doesn't hurt that the dresses are gorgeous, but whatever.

i guess i should post some ads since this is an advertising graphic design class.
here are a few i saw in comm arts that i liked for various reasons:
