PETA XXX

PETA to launch its own porn site: Does exploiting women promote animal rights?

By Lylah M. Alphonse, Senior Editor, Yahoo! Shine | Work + MoneyWed, Sep 21, 2011 12:05 AM EDT
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the animal-rights group known for its controversial ads featuring nearly naked starlets, is taking their "I'd rather be naked than wear fur" idea to a new level by launching their own XXX porn site.

That's right: The same organization that fights to protect animals plans to do so via a medium that often exploits and denigrates women.

"We're hoping to reach a whole new audience of people, some of whom will be shocked by graphic images that maybe they didn't anticipate seeing when they went to the PETA triple-X site," Lindsay Rajt, PETA's associate director of campaigns, told Reuters

The X-rated site will show pornographic content and images from PETA's more risque ads, Rajt said. Those images will be interspersed with pictures and videos showing animals being mistreated-and (we're not making this up) links to vegan and vegetarian "starter kits" and recipes.

"When people first visit the site, it will be very enticing and once they go just a little bit deeper, that's when they'll be confronted with images that we hope will make them stop and think and get them talking and hopefully encourage them to make a lifestyle change to a plant-based diet," Rajt said.

Yes, they expect it to be "enticing." But to whom? People who like crush films, porn that shows women killing small animals by stomping them to death?

It seems unlikely that people who are drawn to both pornography and violent video about abused animals would be looking for a way to convert to vegetarianism. But that's PETA's plan.

Other animal rights activists are skeptical about the idea.

"It's like promoting robberies as an alternative to assaults," said Brian M. Messenheimer, an Army veteran who does animal rescue work in the Boston area.

Adult film stars Sahsa Grey, Ron Jeremy, and Jenna Jamison have all appeared in PETA's ads and have had very successful careers in porn, and PETA insists that the women they'll feature on their port site are willing participants as well, so exploitation doesn't enter into the equation.

"Our demonstrators, the models, all chose to participate in our campaigns," Rajt pointed out, before invoking the "F" word: "It's not a very feminist thing to do to turn to women and tell them whether or not they can use their voices, their bodies to express their voice."

But for countless other women who were forced into the porn industry or are stuck in sexually violent relationships, being a "willing participant" doesn't mean they aren't also victims of abuse. Messenheimer looks at it in terms of animals. "Does it lessen the fact that dogs trained to fight are willing participants?" he asks.

Pornography and feminism aside, PETA has also been criticized for its treatment of the animals it claims to have rescued. According to their own data, filed with the Department of Agriculture in Virginia, in 2010 PETA took in 2,345 homeless dogs and cats-and euthanized 2,301 of them.

What do you think? Is pornography a valid way to promote animal rights?

Here are some great stone type movie posters. If only it were easier to incorporate stone type into every project that you do, but sadly it wouldn't be appropriate.

The Branding of the Occupy Movement

Kalle Lasn, the longtime editor of the anticonsumerist magazine Adbusters, did not invent the anger that has been feeding the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations across the United States. But he did brand it.

Terry Richardson's "Mom and Dad" at Half Gallery

Photographer Terry Richardson's new show "Mom and Dad" at the Half Gallery (208 Forsyth St.) shows a very different side to Richardson's photography. Instead of his usual sexually explicit fashion photography he takes on an intimate subject, his mother and father (Schizophrenic photographer Bob Richardson). The image above is him sitting on the floor of the show which is covered in family photographs.

Here is a phenomenal illustrator that I happened upon on Facebook. He draws large format charcoal drawings of celebrities, just by looking at his phone. His grey scale is handled beautifully, and the video of his drawing the joker portrait is nothing short of inspiration. Check it out.

The Black Keys

new tune, new video.

Dan Mumford

Here is Dan Mumford, one of my favorite illustrators. I find inspiration from his colors, detail in line, and great way of drawing forms. I never knew that I had known who Dan Mumford was a long time before I actually knew his name. He did album art for A Day To Remember, Miss May I, The Devil Wears Prada, The Plot In You, Scarlett O'Hara and many more. Even if you don't like the subjects that he draws, you can still really appreciate his line work and color pallets.

http://www.dan-mumford.com/home

Also, here is Jordan Buckley, who doubles as the bassist of Every Time I Die and an awesome Illustrator. His line work is awesome, and he really has a great sense of color and the balance between color and line thickness. At times his subjects can get pretty dumb, but overall I think his work is pretty intriguing.

Art inspired by Design

Cuore by Pierpaolo Ferrari and Maurizio Cattelan. This piece was inspired by Milton Glaser's famous I heart NY for Ferrari and Cattelan's magazine Toilet Paper. Maurizio Cattelan is an Italian artist known for his satirical sculptures , which include pieces like The Ninth Hour which depicted Pope John Paul II being struck down by a meteorite and Not Afraid of Love which depicted an elephant in a Ku Klux Klan robe. Cattelan's retirement show begins on November 4th at the Guggenheim and allegedly many of his sculptures will hang from the ceiling of Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic viewing gallery.

Food Truck Race

The Great Food Truck Race is Kicking Off

The Great Food Truck Race is a welcome departure from the standard food network reality show featuring master chefs and elaborate kitchens. The Great Food Truck Race focuses on ‘gourmet’ food trucks, as they are pitted against each other to sell the most lunches and escape weekly elimination. The show offers unexpected insight into the daily lives of mobile food vendors, and travels with them as they travel from coast to coast selling their often unique signature meals. A large portion of the country is still weary at the thought of eating from food trucks, and something this show does well is advertising the true value of mobile food. The chefs who operate these trucks are often professionally acclaimed, and their food is nothing to look down upon.
Season 2 premieres August 15th on the Food Network, and will feature eight new trucks from around the country. One of these trucks is New York City’s very own Korilla BBQ, though the vast majority is from California. Hosted by famed restaurateur Chef Tyler Florence, the show will certainly kick up some appetites and raise some awareness for gourmet food trucks. We’ll be back with our very own take on the premiere, come two weeks.

Vursa Limited

Vursa Limited is a great clothing line run by lead singer, Levi Benton of Miss May I. Not only are the designs really clean and great looking but each design is printed in limited qualities and once they are sold out they won't be printed again. Benton said in an interview that if he wasn't in Miss May I, he would have followed through with his plans to get a degree in advertising.

Liam Brazier

These are great illustrations by Liam Brazier. His style is unique and executed beautifully. Each one has an element of surprise and takes the vectoring of an image one step further. Those Star Wars portraits are amazing!

Kyle Crawford aka Electric Zombie

Here is one of my favorite illustrators, Kyle Crawford. Regardless of whether you like the music he does artwork for, appreciating his skill in design, typography, and illustration is easy. His textures, and loose style of typography is excellent, as well as a great use brushes in a non corny way. While i think this is great and innovative as well as doing artwork supporting the music i enjoy, others I have shown him to haven't been impressed with his work and think it's run of the mill. What do you think?

Reebok Sued

The federal government says Reebok’s advertising is a bit too cheeky.

In a complaint filed Wednesday in federal court, the Federal Trade Commission said Reebok could not back up its “better way to a better butt” advertising claims in marketing the popular EasyTone and RunTone shoes. The company has agreed to refund $25 million to consumers.

The settlement, which awaits court approval, bans Reebok from making further unsubstantiated claims about the strengthening and toning benefits of its entire line of toning shoes. Reebok started making the pitch in print, television and Internet advertisements in 2009 but pulled the ads in the midst of the FTC probe.

“Advertisers can’t make claims about their product without having some basis for it,” said David Vladeck, director of the FTC’s Consumer Protection Bureau. “That’s the law.”

Toilet Paper/Cut Paper Roll Sculptures

I often find myself lurking Behance to gain inspiration. What I like about Behance is that not only can you gain inspiration from professionals in all different fields of design, but you can also find some inspiration from students in college. New design is added everyday, and it gives you a great chance to interact with professionals in the field if you have an account.

Looking at it tonight, I found these delicately beautiful cut paper sculptures made from toilet paper rolls. The use of shadows and silhouettes are great. Check it out.

Microscopic Sculptures

Some of you may have already heard of Willard Wigan. I recently was told about him, and still have a hard time believing what I see. He creates microscopic sculptures with grains of sand and dust. He was working on an Alice in Wonderland sculpture and suddenly couldn't find her. His conclusion was that he may have inhaled her.
